Default D16y8 rods in a JDM D15B?

According to the machine shop parts file a d16z6 rod has the same part # as a d16y8. How true is this? Because from a thread I've read earlier today gave the specs on what parts work with a JDM D15B short block with XXX head. I'll post the "copy and paste" of the info

My d15b/ d16z6 head Frankenstein long block has a bent rod and a warped crank which the crank is fixable, but need a rod, turns out D series engines are not as plentiful as they were back in my OG days (2000-2008) and the ones I found on marketplace are either knocking/bad and want too much $$

D15B and D16Z/Y connecting rods are NOT the same. The D15B rod is shorter than the D16 rod.

That is not true. Obd1 D15B vtec and D15Z1 rods are the same length as D16Z6.
D15B uses the same p28 rods that the d16z6 does.
The D15Z1 rod has the smaller 1.5 sized big end.

So, you are saying that the reduced deck height and the reduced stroke of a D15 engine are equal and would allow the use of a 137mm length rod like what is found in the D16 ? I thought all D15 rods were 5.275" in length and the D16 rods were 5.397" in length. Thanks for "learning me something new" Chris.

The obd1 d15b vtec sure was a special engine. The key is that only in this engine are the rod ends the same size as d16 allowing the use of the p28 rods from the factory.

All other d15 including the d15z1 use a smaller diameter rod end. So you can't put 1.5 rods on a 1.6 crank otherwise and vice versa. Pretty uncommon engine anymore and even back then people didn't really care about them.

Getting back to the OP it will be interesting to see what happens when he tries to install the bearings. If they fit fine then he has a true obd1 d15b vtec crank. If they are too large he likely has an obd2 version with the smaller rod diameter.

Forgot to update this thread.

The d16y8 pistons and rod's are the same in my d15b block, down to the stampings,
which brings the question what era d15b is this one? I'll post some head stampings #'s and what ever I can find on this block.

Engine is up and running BTW, still breaking it in so not much Vtec action, yet.
