Default OBD2 D16Y7 tucked harness for 1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe 2-Door 1.6L

This is the old harness that I need to replace. Not changing anything or modding anything. The harness basically looks like it was molested due to all the electrical tape. This vehicle was from California, does that have anything to do with why I can’t get anyone to send the correct wiring harness???

For some reason anytime I order it on eBay, no matter how specific I am for the part need, with pictures they send they send the wrong part.

Default Cancer sucks and so does this 1997 Civic

So new members are supposed to post about themselves, everyone posts something different, but at this point in my life that is not an uplifting thing to do.
As for cars, first one I ever worked on was a 1958 Pontiac Chieftain my dad and brother bought, I only really remember is it had, I believe, an original DeLorean X frame and the glass was etched. I don’t recall much else about it except somehow it hurt when they sold it.
Basically everything I think of to write ends up about my kids or families cars or the hell Cancer has caused to my family because fixing anything without my husbands help adds days to a job.
But, about myself, I will give this a try
I enjoy bonding with my son he lets me. When he fixes motorcycles, dirt bikes, quads, I love learning from him, even in the winter when it’s below zero and trying to hold tools with numb hands painfully impossible, it is and I think will always be one of my fondest memories.
My spouse is the car guru, but has been ill for years. I’m totally out of my comfort zone trying to figure out Honda Civic wiring harness but husband just had another surgery so I’m on my own and have to reach out to you guys and gals for help.

I’m just a parent and old tech with only low voltage wiring knowledge but trying to help my teenage son with the only thing he could afford, a 1997 Honda Civic is what I am doing now. This car has been so badly molested I found out it’s literally illegal in NY (not to mention almost unrecognizable).
Again, if I could afford to buy him something reliable I would but in life you have to learn work with the hand your dealt.
This car is a never ending can of worms, latest is replacing wiring harness. If I had the money I would buy him something reliable but there are many good lessons to be learned fixing old cars, even mistakes are a learning experience.
For some reason replacing the harness for this car is a nightmare. If anyone can share some knowledge,
it’s a 1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe 2-Door 1.6L 1588CC98Cu. In. 14 GAS SOHC Naturally Aspirated.

Don't buy a tucked harness... they will not fit nor function as you would like. EBay is a good source for finding used replacement parts... not NEW parts that are NOT OEM.

My son says it’s throwing a bunch of coders and it accelerates and decelerates, it sounds to me, when it is idling it just revs up a and down and you can hear it rev continuously goes up and down. He eliminated everything else and he says there can’t be that many bad sensors all of a sudden. I’m old school and just wanted to check continuity of each wire, I’m patient and find it relaxing, I worked for Siemens back in the day and I never did mind methodology checking everything when doing PM’s

First: What codes specifically ?
Second: Post a picture of the engine harness plugged into the ECU and a close up of the green crossover plug connected to the matching plug under the dash. Do all wires correspond to an opposing wire on the other side of the plug ?
Third: What is the part number of the ECU ? It should be 37820-PXX-AXX (the "X"s are digits that are variable and this is what I am interested in)

The engine block is stamped "D16Y5" which is a specialized lean burn, high fuel efficiency version with a wideband O2 sensor. The engine harness should have a primary O2 sensor on the front left corner of the cylinder head just above the transmission... if the plug is a 4-wire square plug, then the engine harness would be for a Y8. If it is an 8-wire rectangular plug, then the engine harness is for a Civic HX with the D16Y5 engine.

The ECU conversion harness and the P28 ECU convert the OBD-2 diagnostic system back to OBD-1 specifications, and this is why your scanner does not work. However, if you look just above your son's hand in the third photo from the top in your previous post, there is a small female blue 2-wire plug. This is the diagnostic service connector... if you use a "U" shaped paper clip and insert it into the two female pins on the plug with the key in the on position, the "Check Engine" light will begin to flash. Have your son record the flashes for at least 30 seconds and post the video.

You have given me MOST of the ECU part number... but I still do not know the version/type. What I have now is 37820-P28-AXX. Please fill in the last two "X"s.

Also, remove the lid of the ECU and check to see if it is standard or a "Chipped" ECU... if you hold the ECU vertically with the ECU plugs facing up at the 12 O'clock position, there is an auxiliary chip location (labeled 27C256 on the board if it is open), and if the ECU is chipped, who knows what calibration is on the ECU at this point... and in turn, how it would run/control the engine that is installed in the chassis. Post a pic of the ECU board too if you don't mind.
