Icon4 2004 CR-V 4WD needs trans?

Hi All,

Apologies for long post, this vehicle means a lot to me so trying to be thorough.

I currently have a CR-V with 230,000 miles I got from my grandmother.
She past a while ago and is one of the only things I have of her so want to get it running healthy.

History:
Vehicle has been well maintained oil changes every 3-4k miles, transmission service every 60,000.
Vehicle has had zero engine work and zero transmission work minus PMs. Both are original OEM (this includes seals/gaskets)

Issue:
When shifting into drive from park I hear / feel quite a loud clank as it moves to gear.
It is very abnormal metal on metal grinding; not the normal thunk of a parking sprawl.
How I know its not sprawl:
Used parking break to release pressure from sprawl while shifting. Hard thump and metallic grinding still occurs.
When shifting from N to drive same symptoms occur.

Other issues:
It is hard shifting when upshifting in all gears no issue downshifting. When doing very slow acceleration it is not to bad but noticeable.

Diagnostic notes:
I have a good live data scanner that shows crank shaft out put to transmission RPMs are not completely aligned so there is slippage.

OBD2 codes:
There are zero transmissions codes, however there is two engine codes { x2 of (P1077) x1 (P0134) } which I am fixing this weekend.

Fix for codes:
for both P1077 Changing out IMRC runner as it is gummed up with oil and nasty most of the seals are bad,
P0134 replacing O2 sensor as it is OEM and has carbon build up.

For transmission since it is likely going to need a torque converter at the very least I am thinking of swapping the transmission since I have to take it off anyway to do the torque converter.
Current cost of transmission from what I can find is around $500-$700.

What I need assistance with deciding is:
A: Should I swap the transmission? Why or why not?
B: Should I buy a K24 long-block / trans combo swap both then rebuild the current ones for a spare?
C: Where is a reputable place to buy used engines / transmissions?
D: Where is a reputable replace to buy rebuilt engines / transmissions?
E: What do I need to keep in mind when swapping a new transmission VS the old if using the same engine?
E1: What do I need to keep in mind is swapping both engine and transmission?
(If swapping engine and trans I plan on swapping any good sensors from the old engine so ECU doesn't freak out, if it does ill default it to reteach and flash the VIN map)

Note: I am not an Auto mechanic but I am a Robotics mechanic (more programming side) so any advise for cost effective navigation and technical tips are much appreciated.

Glad to answer any questions, or take any advise.

LKQ Online
I've used these guys for years. Purchased over 20 engines and 5 transmissions from them over the years.
They are nation wide, so there should be a location near you. Unfortunately their prices are always on the
high end of the price range. But I was only ever upset about one purchase ever. All the others were great.
A rear end I bought looked like it was dragged out of a lake bottom. (It wasn't) I needed the guts from it.
They worked great, so I really shouldn't complain at all. They gave me a cheaper price on it, since the
outside looked in such bad condition. Those parts are still in use. In fact, everything I've bought from them
over the years is still in use today. They are on eBay too, so I searched for a local location. Then searched
eBay for their lists items. Purchased them off eBay for cheaper, then opted for local pick up to save on shipping.

Just do a good search, most of the big national rebuild outfits can be a huge joke. They have mostly unskilled labor doing the work. And do all they can to deny warranty's.

Parking PAWL not sprawl.

Do you have the service manual?

These transmissions are essentially automated manual transmissions.

Places to get engines and transmission are some of the local JDM outfits. Prices maybe better than any national rebuild outfit, and a warranty that works.
I've had good luck with a local one here many years ago
