1992 Accord - PS Pump Rebuild or Reman Help
Hi,
My 1992 Accord, 259K, 5 speed, that is my baby. I've had it since 8 miles. After recent work on the valve cover gasket, it suddenly had a lot of foam in the power steering reservoir such that it overflowed. My tech changed the return hose, which helped, but there's still foam so there is obviously still air getting in. As you can imagine, parts are hard to find for this baby, and he/I can't find the Honda O-ring needed (91303-PT0-004). I found a kit that has it, but he said that buying a remanufactured pump would be the way to go. Basically spending money on the reman pump may be less than the labor to take the existing pump apart and rebuild. I have looked all over the web and cannot find a NEW Honda ps pump or the o-ring he's looking for (its #20 in the parts diagram for the 1992 Accord PS https://www.hondapartsconnection.com...gine--p-s-pump ).
Even if I found a new OEM, wouldn't it be so old that the O-rings and seals may be old and brittle (I don't know when Honda stopped making these, but apparently its been a long time).
My first choice would have been to buy an OEM new pump, but that isn't an option. So I have analysis paralysis on whether to buy a reman pump, a new after-market pump, or the kit to have him rebuild my original Honda ps pump.
Rock Auto has - BBB, Cardone, and Maval remans. I have read mixed reviews on Cardone (mostly negative) and Maval, and nothing on the BBB.
Rock also has a new BBB pump, and an Edelmann PS Pump Seal Kit with the O-ring.
Can someone give me sage advice and nudge me in the right direction? I am grateful.

I have re-sealed a Honda power steering pump before by purchasing a seal kit. These can be had for under $20. Be careful when disassembling it and make sure you do it over something to catch any small pieces. There are lots of small fins that will come out and I ended up picking them up our of the grass for an hour. Other than that it's actually very easy and straight-forward.
I would be comfortable resealing a power steering pump, but parts like a brake caliper I find more risky than buying a remanufactured part. Sometimes it's easier to pay a little more than putting in the work. I have also read mixed reviews on some brands, like Cardone, but that same brand also makes high quality parts for other systems like brake calipers. There's nothing worse than a noisy PS pump, so I would reseal the one you have, because it's 100% Honda. Just stay away from Duralast.

I used to do these rebuilds regularly when this model was still pretty widespread. The moving parts are pretty robust and usually a fresh seal kit will have it working like new again. Not especially challenging to swap out the seals either. That's what I would go for first. if heavy wear or internal damage is found while installing the new seals, it won't be worse than before after it's back together. but, then you can make a plan to have a rebuilt unit installed.
Another option would be to go to a scrap yard and try to find a lower-mile car that you could take the pump from. Just an option but I have an older honda and it can be a nightmare to find small and otherwise random parts. Best of luck man.
