My rear brakes are clunking when I come to a stop and I'm wondering if this indicates that it's time to replace the rear brakes? I don't know when or if they have ever been replaced in the 130k the car has been driven but if it is time, should I be replacing the whole thing including the drums or just shoes?

 

Replace them when the friction material gets thin. Have you tried adjusting them? I think the procedure is just to pump the hand brake. If you use the hand brake regularly this probably is not going to make any difference. I remember I had a car that the drum brakes were adjusted by firm application of the brake when the car was moving in reverse. If it was a grinding sound instead of clunking I would probably recommend replacing the drums as well. Take a look at the surface of the drums when you remove them to check the shoes. You will probably need to give the drums a few really hard whacks with a hammer to free them up. Other than that they are easy to remove (as long as you don't engage the hand brake while attempting to remove the drums)
