Default T1 style cam only trigger vs cam + crank trigger setup

Well I'm currently at a crossroad for my build. Delacruz has a dual pole magnet setup on their T1 style trigger kit so I'm told it is basically an "updated" design of the T1. Regardless, I know the T1 setup is a proven setup. Is it enough for a stand alone ecu for position triggering or is the cam plus the crank trigger really the only way to go?

The only downside I can see of the cam only is the possibility of belt stretch...?

What ecu did you have in mind. Are you talking about their cam and crank trigger kit. I think it fantastic and the way to go if you have the option. ( Any aftermarket stand alone will work with this setup and is the "desired" when possible ) . You can work of just Camshaft , like the original T1 kit, but adding a proper hall effect @ Crank is the ideal solution. ( uses the 24-2 crank wheel and one magnet in camshaft gear )

I'm going to be running a FuelTech FT550. I talked with FuelTech and they said basically either will work and really couldn't explain what advantages the crank would hold over the improved cam sensor setup. They said a potential situation would be if the car jumped a tooth but then it would also have mechanical issues there.

It's what you said, you can get some slop in belt/chain .

Taken from internetzz :

It is because the timing chain or timing belt always has a little give and this can obscure the movement of the crankshaft from the camshaft position sensor. Further because the crank shaft is spinning at twice the speed of the camshaft the signal is of a higher resolutio

If you read into platinum racing for RB motors, they discuss belt stretch in detail. High HP motors have high internal acceleration and you get measurable stretch.

I would choose to fire spark when the crank is in the correct place, and reading the crank directly would always be better than deriving that off the cam location.

Hey buddy. How are you? I’m in the same dilemma as you were. Wha did you end up doing? I’m going to run a FT-550 on my build as well. Thinking to run just the hall dual pole sensor on the cam.

Thanks
