Car door speaker replacement for 1995 Honda Civic LX
My factory front car door speakers on my ancient 1995 Honda Civic LX are finally giving up the ghost and I'm looking for a replacement.
I know I need 6.5" speakers and can handle the wiring conversions ... my question for the group is which speakers to buy? I'm a far cry from an audiophile and just what to listen to the radio without distortion. Any suggestions on decent, compatible speakers at a good price? My target budget is $50 for both, if possible.
Re: Car door speaker replacement for 1995 Honda Civic LX
If your running your speakers off the head unit's built in amplifier, it won't matter what speakers you get. Headunits don't have enough power to drive speakers to their limit. Generally headunits only put out between 10 and 17 real watts before the signal starts to clip (distort). Once the signal gets distorted the speakers start making all kinds of unintended noises and can even get burnt inside.
You can choose speakers with a higher sensitivity rating that will go a bit louder before distorting, but they will produce less bass as a result. If you try to crank up the bass to compensate, it will only result in clipping (distorting) at a lower volume level.
This is just the nature of audio. My point is any inexpensive 6.5" speaker will work fine. Coaxial speakers speakers will be better. Coaxial speakers have a separate tweeter in the middle for better treble. Use crutchfields website to find options that will fit your doors (not all will fit).
PS: You definitely don't need wiring upgrades if your not using a very powerful amp. My door speakers are driven at 45-watts (via trunk amp) through my rear speaker wires, jumped over to my door speaker wires. Sounds fantastic.
