Default situation: D16A swap into 99 civic

Hey guys,

I am hoping to get a little advice on how you all would go forward in my situation.

My niece blew the head on her 99 civic. I live far away so I contracted a shop to do the work for the engine replacement for her.

They couldn't find a d16y8 long block so we decided to go with a D16A vtec. I purchased the engine and had it delivered to the shop.

They got really confused as the crank position sensor wouldn't fit on the D16A.

I explained to them that the D16A didn't utilize the sensor and that we could either swap the usdm oil pump over to the d16a, run the crank position sensor, and run the d16y8 ecu

or

bypass the crank sensor with the ckf bypass trick https://ff-squad.com/wp/?p=309 and run the d16a oil pump / d16y8 ecu

or

I was seeing some guys just run the D16A Vtec ECU and calling it a day.

I provided them with a D16A VTEC ecu and the information for the ckf bypass trick.

Many Months pass

I took delivery of the car a few days ago and it has a check engine light, no speedometer, and a surging idle.

To top it off, looking at the ecu I see a 99-00 B16 ecu.

In this situation what would you guys do as far as ecu setup? i'm assuming the surge and cel is from them just running a b16 ecu (for some unknown reason) I am thinking about just running the y8 ecu and doing the ckf trick while I am in town.
