2001 Honda CRV - touchscreen double din android radio installed
I eliminated my clock when I started working on my car (I changed it over to a voltage gauge), so I wanted to nice big radio with a clock. I also like the idea of having android auto. I bought this unit which runs a linux os. The only tricky part was getting it to fit to my liking. I designed a trim ring in CAD, and 3D printed it with high temp abs. Then I filled it with a 2k filler-primer, and sprayed it flat black with trim paint.
nasty gap around the edges the first try is never right and I don't worry about things like the color - I just want to print it to see where I need to tune in the design. fits good after 3 tries, ready for paint and finishing - this time I use black because it will hide the best building up primer sanding down preparing for color once the texture is completely hidden this is what the final product looks like I figured out how to change the boot screen logo into a honda logo I made a little CRV wallpaper with GIMP that is red/yellow and orange just like all of the custom LED work I did for this interior of this car

Very well done. I've been wanting to get a 3D printer, but I have too much going on right now to even think about getting one. I'll get one eventually.

Having the printer is part of it but getting fast and fluent with CAD is 80% of the battle. I had my printer years before we got one at work and I did not get good at this stuff until I started making things quickly at work. Also - you need to print with ABS if you want to do automotive fabrication- the PLA stuff people use at home typically will not hold up. I use an open source package for Linux called "freecad" which has a steep learning curve- but once you get fluent with it, the benefits (cost) is nice. There are easier softwares to learn, but they are not open source.

I've dabbled in CAD before years ago. I know some of those programs have a steep learning curve and I remember that I struggled with the one I was using. I'd have to buy one that is easy to learn.

You don't have to 'buy' open source software- it's free as in "free beer" and "free" as in freedom from corporations. Download and try freecad - https://www.freecad.org/downloads.php
