It's a mile from home. 2000 civic ex automatic. I was rocking it out of a snowbank with drive/reverse and the passenger side axle snapped.

I'd rather replace the axle in my heated garage than in the snowbank...of course.

It's a shame that I can't just use the left wheel to get home. Any trick to be able to do this?

I ordered the axle at a storefront down the street from the crime.

Parts guy looked at that photo and said yeah, "I've seen this before"

I said, "what's that rubber donut thingy there?"

He said, "that's a harmonic thingamabob on the OEM axle. The new part won't have that."

I said, "Well, hell..looks to me like that donut collected salt and water and just rusted the axle to **** and there you go".

He said, "mebbey".

 

I have to say tho... when everything went south while I was rockin out of that snowbank my first thought was definitely I. Am. Definitely. Fucked.

The sound of this, as you can imagine, was 3000USD worth of transmission replacement. The car blue books for less than that. I'm definitely fucked. When I crawled under the car to look I was as elated... as it is humanly possible to discover a broken axle.

So. There's that.
