A friend of mine has a 2012 CRV EX. He drove it for 5 months with a slow leak in one of the tires and TPMS amber light on almost continuously, stopping once a week or so to add air.
3 weeks ago, he said in addition to the tire pressure light, the Electric Power Steering, Traction Control, and the amber Engine lights also came on and stayed on. He said he bought a “cheap scanner tool” and cleared the codes, then had leaking tire fixed. No warning lights have reappeared in almost a month of driving 30 miles/day average.
He said the Honda/import mechanic he spoke with told him that Honda is known to “program” their SUVs so that if a tire low-pressure warning light is ignored long enough, after a certain amount of time other warning lights will illuminate and remain on even though nothing is actually wrong. This mechanic told my friend that Honda does this to “get the attention” of the driver and effectively compel him/her to get the car “fixed” (in this case getting the slow leak in the tire fixed).
The concept of a manufacturer purposely generating “fake” warning lights to compel an owner to take their car to a shop seems absurd. But I am also acquainted with the mechanic who sewed this yarn. He has owned a small (2-3 mechanic), but very successful car repair shop for around 30 years. I just don’t get it. Do car manufacturers actually play these games with instrument panel warning lights? Or is this just a line of BS from a guy that just has been BS-ing too many customers for way too long?
Sounds like a line of BS to me. I know you can't turn off traction control with the TPMS light illuminated but that's about all. But I am not one to run with the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree.
Cold weather brings out the weak 12v batteries. All of those lights will come on with a weak or bad 12v battery. How old is their battery?
Sounds like BS and he doesn't understand the systems in the CR-V.
As stated in the owner's manual:
If the low tire pressure, or TPMS indicator comes on
or blinks, the VSA® system comes on automatically. In
this case, you cannot turn the system off by pressing
the button.
The main function of the VSA® system is generally
known as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The
system also includes a traction control function
My 09 does this and only this. . I have a steady TPMS light on, just had tires and 2 TPMS sensors replaced. But the VSR is working fine without a light coming on in the dash but unable to turn it off. Which is fine by me.
