I have a 99 Civic HX w/ 274k miles that on the drivers side it makes a metal on metal sound when you hit a bump or sometimes press lightly on the brake pedal and doesn't always do this. I currently have my local shop looking at it but the son I thought knew Honda's pretty well but can't figure it out but said the tie rod on the passenger side was slightly loose but nothing major, he was able to replicate it but hasn't been able to properly diagnose it yet but put it on the lift and cannot find anything that's sloppy or wore out. I know in general when these Civic's get some age and miles on them the suspension bushings wear out. The car doesn't really exhibit any other symptoms, everything else is good, steering, suspension, brakes, etc...I know the struts and springs could probably be replaced at some point but it's not bouncy or anything out of the ordinary and the tires are wearing well. I was going to order a suspension bushing kit but honestly it doesn't make sense to put new bushings into the old parts, polyurethane is out for me and I don't want to deal with the squeaks and having to lubricate the bushings, this a daily driver so minimal maintenance.
Sorry it's just kinda hard to troubleshoot and it doesn't always do this, awhile back I've installed new pads/rotors, also the caliper on that side, the issue was there before and after the brake job. The next step is for the shop owner to test drive it but if they can't figure it out I do have another shop I can try that I've heard is very reasonable, I don't know how good he is but left the local Ford dealer that went on his own and is currently doing a bunch of work on my co-worker's Civic.
