Default How does oil get into here?

New to this forum. I’ve been doing some small mechanic jobs for the past 3 years now and have some skills/tools

My dad was driving his 2006 Honda odyssey in Oakland last night when he got a check engine light and it started to run poorly. He had it towed home and I’m trying to get him going again.

I scanned the computer and it showed a cylinder 2 misfire. I pulled the coil and was surprised to see it was completely submerged in oil. I pulled the other coils on that bank too and cylinder 1 was dry but cylinder 3 was also a bit wet. The only way I can think of oil getting in there is through the spark plug somehow but more likely through the valve cover. Let me know!

The oil in the coil tube is likely due to a failed coil tube seal that is pressed into the underside of the valve cover (a.k.a.; "head cover"). It's possible the oil in the coil tube migrated under the coil boot and is fouling the connection to the spark plug, causing a misfire in that cylinder.

Order a head cover gasket set (OEM p/n: 12030-RYE-A01), then plan a day to do the deed. See if that makes the DTC disappear.

Thanks! I was thinking this is the only way to get oil in there but it’s always good to ask. I primarily work on Volvos and finding good gaskets that don’t fail instantly is actually a difficult task. Is there a preferred brand to use for these gaskets? Also what’s a good intake manifold gasket to get while I’m in there.

Genuine Honda or Fel-Pro

The intake manifold gasket can be re-used. It is extremely unlikely it needs to be replaced.

Don’t buy Fel pro gaskets, go on line to Rock Auto (Mahale brand) or go to Honda.

The Fel pro coil tube seals were very difficult to make sure they fit properly on the steel coil tube.

I had to use a mirror and a small screwdriver to adjust them while installing the valve cover.

Got them all perfect on the coil tube, but a royally PIA to do.
