Looking for advice... my D16Y7 engine is at 414k miles but needs a rebuild or swap (I am certain the rings are bad and I am pretty sure there is a sticky valve). I found a remanufactured engine for sale from Autozone which looks promising: https://www.autozone.com/powertrain/...38b/562071_0_0
Not sure though how to work this with a mechanic with a warranty. I bought the car new, so I'm kind of an old guy now. When I bought it I was young. I can do intermediate repairs. I feel like a $5k investment is still better than getting a new or used car. The visibility in the car is great, it's easy to maneuver, and has kind of cool "old beatup Honda chic" too. A few years ago I drove it coast to coast

Since you're going to be pulling the engine anyway, I would recommend trying to find a shop that will do a full rebuild your current longblock - Ideally one that would pull the engine, rebuild, and reinstall all as one job. I'd bore the cylinders out to whatever the next sized piston is.
There are many rebuild kits online that would include the bulk of the parts/gaskets/bearings that you would need.
Thanks. I like this idea the best (ChanceEG). The only hitch is that I can't find a shop that does everything, but I haven't looked a lot either. This is the greater Seattle area. I did get a quote last year, probably went up, from a reputable machine shop that would do it for $3500 and they also need it shipped to them, which sounded like a bit high and a hassle too. Part of the problem is that in the last few years I've done most of the repairs myself, like new fuel pump and radiator, and so I just don't have a regular mechanic.
Go to the junkyard and look for a lower mileage d16y7.
Rebuild your original engine.
Never buy an engine from a chain parts store. $5000 will buy 2 more running civics.
Thanks. The engine I was looking at was like $2k or so with the core. But I think it's a whole day of labor. I like the idea of finding a used engine, but that seems like a gamble. In fact my original engine still is not THAT bad. Last I checked compression all 4 were over 150 PSI hot. The problem is that freeway driving causes my 3rd cylinder to start losing compression. It still runs, but rough. I can't take on the project of rebuilding myself now, though I'd love to learn how.
Call around and see what shops have good communication. Just tell them you're looking to have the complete job done, old engine out, fully rebuilt, and reinstalled.
