91 accord won't shift out of park
Hey all, so I neglected my spare car for awhile, I didn't start it up for about 6 months (I know, not good) everything was good when it was last driven but now it won't shift out of park unless I use the little key override slot. First thing I checked yesterday was if I could hear the shift interlock solenoid? clicking, it wasn't. Hit the brake about 10 times and it started clicking and was able to shift out of park but today it's back to not working and no amount of hitting the brake would get it to work. Any recommendations on what to start checking first and what to look for to make it not work? Shift interlock solenoid? Brake safety switch? Brake lights do work.
As a car sits, it gets some weird film gathering inside on everything. 99.9% of what I driver are manuals, so I am just throwing out an idea for a place to start until others comment.
I would think that it would be under the base/cover around the shifter. I assume that that interlock is just a little gummy. I would think some WD-40 or better yet rubbing alcohol may take care of it. Worst case scenario, you can check to see if you are getting power to that switch when you press on the brakes. At least I assume that is where the switch is.

Thank you for the suggestion, I've got the console open to look at it, haven't taken it out yet and I have no idea how to take the thing apart once I get it out and unfortunately am running into walls trying to find any diagrams of the part or any for sale online for this year and it doesn't help that "shift interlock solenoid" and "shift solenoid" seems to be used interchangeably a lot of places even though they're 2 different part and some people call them shift release etc etc sorry, ranting here, I hate being unable to find the info I need

Sorry, I assumed that it was under that cover.
From looking online I did find this thread on this forum. It shows that there is a piece on the transmission with two solenoids that activate to allow the transmission out of park when you press on the brakes.
I also saw that there is a youtube video on testing if (off the car) with a battery or battery charger.
Sorry for sending you in the wrong direction with looking under the cover.

Oh I'm sorry for being confusing, you weren't off at all! It is in the console. I did figure out how to get it out now, still nervous trying to take it apart without knowing what the insides look like though, haha. Thank you for trying to help, very much appreciated.
