I have a 96 civic ex that the previous owner swapped a d16y5 with an a4ra a/t. It had a p1705 code even after replacing the transmission range sensor which is on the shifter. Not sure if it's dead bulbs or not but it doesn't illuminate in park or D4. No starting issues and seems to only drive in what I'm guessing is 2nd and 4th gear.
