My first Honda build and would like some idea as where to go
What up everyone l, recently acquired a 97 exr with 189k on it and want to know how far I can take it
I have f22b1 and I’m assuming stock
just got the engine stand and I’m planning to buy parts first so I can hook everything up and plug it in
any pointers and things to purchase would be greatly appreciated
i have standard tools and some power tools
have a tractor to lift the engine and a engine stand rated for 1000lbs
I want to know what to buy like lifters, rods, pistons, and might as well swap out cams but I want to know what compliments each other as far as parts go
I want to make it a turbo but I hear an AC delete is needed and would rather avoid this since I’m in Missouri but if needed so be it
want to know what transmission to get and maybe clutches to accommodate power and shifting ease
ive looked everywhere for information and done all the research including the shitty little search button up top
and since everyone has a different approach I might as well setup something that centralizes my questions
I watch the Honda guy on YouTube and see how to approach it but I don’t know jack about piston size and compression
but I am actively researching and trying to find a h22 or another f22b1 I can build out of the vehicle then plug and play
well more like plug and struggle lol
either way any insight would be awesome

Re: My first Honda build would like some indie as where tongo
It’sa 5 speed good sir
when I first got it had a high pitch sound to it which sounded like power steering pump but it didn’t squeal when I turned the wheels, it sounds like a high pitch electronic kinda so maybe that’s the V tech
But what made me want to do the tear down was when I was driving it around
i got stuck on a hill behind a slow driver and stalled
started the vehicle back up and was holding up traffic so I kinda inadvertently launched it and it took off nice but was jerking back and forth because I am a novice and probably didn’t let go of the clutch enough
but I learn by trial by fire, unfortunately after that I believe the lifter started knocking because when I popped the hood and accelerate manually on the intake manifold, it definitely knocks
higher gears as I’m driving are quieter than lower gears, lower gears sounds like timing chain tensioner but it’s coming from the back so I’m guessing lifters or possibly pistons but I don’t know what pistons sound like when they are bad
I did notice there is a oil leak because I changed the oil when I got it from the auction about 3 weeks ago and it’s just below the safe line when it was full
I had put Lucas oil in to quite it down but I think it might need something more
just got a engine stand from harbor freight so I’m leaning towards tear down and buying a nice front end deal on lqk for everything up front steering related for like $175

Re your engine, do a compression test before you do any tear down
nice that’s good to know on the tensioner and non vtech sqeal
Maybe I mispoke a bit, it definitely sounds like a high pitch electronic sound kinda like tennitus but doesn’t sound like it’s metallic and when I rev it, it does get louder in pitch
It reminds me of the chirp when the engine starts and gets going
other than that I’ll pull it in and take out the plugs and spark plugs and test each chamber to see what psi I get out of the compression
for the most part my gauge has psi on it but I see everyone putting ratios for compression like 18:00 or some **** like this
would psi be a correct measure or am I doing something differ

PSI is what you need for compression testing. Want all 4 cylinders to be as close as possible to each other. Can post your results after you get it done.
Can try for a video as well of the "high pitched" noise. Can upload to yo utube and share the link here if thats easier etc
Compression ratio is just an engine specification, it shows the ratio of the volume in the cylinder between piston at BDC and TDC. Basically it just tells you if an engine is a high compression type engine or not etc.
Re: My first Honda build would like some indie as where tongo
Also I’m thinking of doing something stupid and wanted to know if there is a v6 possibility of my engine
i found some info about the different engine’s for this car but no info on a v6 manual version that will fit
i did find a decently priced j35a6 from an odyssey but I’m sure it’s an automatic
I’m pretty much just bored and want to try and dive into something without spending years waiting for an opportunity at the shop or spending thousands on school and still having the same questions
Re: My first Honda build would like some indie as where tongo
So I got the vehicle inside and currently eating lunch but I managed to get the link uploaded and about 4 central time I’ll do the compression test and get those result’s uploaded
but in the beginning you’ll hear the high pitchy sound
to me it sounds normal but I could be wrong
and the second half of the video you’ll hear an angry growl which sounds internal but lower end
that happened after i launched it at the light and I’m pretty sure it’s crankshaft because they other day I turned the key on quickly and it felt like it was misfiring or something but ehh

Reference spec is Nominal 1250 kPa (178 psi)Minimum 950 kPa (135 psi)Max. Variation 200 kPa (28 psi)
assuming you read it right then your compression is WAY up.... like...... basically perfect

So there is that... What next?
the link has a video of some sounds that are concerning
but basically from here it’s replacing fuel lines because they are rusted to hell
maybe the charcoal canister but it’s not giving me problems
injectors possibly, grinding down the cam ( I found a place called delta cams that would do it for like 160)
intake manifold but didn’t know what I would be looking for as far as efficiency
basic maintenance if anything on a 20 year old vehicle
i like to take care of things before anything happens
but I’m all looking into a stage 1 chip and building till I’m ready for stage 2
i see the obd ones but I thought I saw something on a p28 ecu but I have no idea where to get a modded one with a 2 step, I think it’s called, and a launch control programmed into it
that’s just to start
still researching and finding info everywhere
for the most part I’m finding it’s just getting in there and seeing what works
