B16a3 distributor rattle
Hey everyone Ive been having this rattle noise coming from my distributor area. It’s very noticeable when cold start but goes away once warm, unless you raise the rpm’s to around 2.5k then you can still hear it. Ive just finished replacing pistons, new timing belt, ect. The same noise was there before I did the work but I put a new distributor on and it went away, fast forward to after the work, re-install same dizzy and noise is back. Replaced 3 times with new ones from the part store(I think remand) and they all still rattled. Did I just get 3 bad new dizzy’s? I popped out the little cover for the timing chain tensioner bolt and loosened it up and spun the engine a little bit by hand to put tension on the exhaust cam and crank side of the timing belt and retightened the tensioner bolt to make sure the belt wasn’t loose. I’m out of ideas other than ordering another dizzy. I’ve searched online and on Hondatech and have found people with similar problems but all have seem to have not been solved. I’m not looking for the answer of a Honda tech said it’s normal. It was quite before and I want it quite again. Oh and also the car runs perfectly fine with no issues. Help me please!
I will be curious what you find out.
It sounds like you have tried a few different distributors, so I guess the bearing in the dizzy is not a factor.
I am guessing you know B16 does not have a timing chain, right?

no the distributors I’ve found are not oem. They are from the standard part stores. Yes I know the b16 has a timing belt, I’m a mechanic and do all my own work. I changed timing belt when building my engine and made sure proper tightening of the belt was done. I even did a belt tension adjustment after everything was back together and was having that rattle noise. Noise still didn’t go away. I’m going to try and readjust the timing belt tension one more time. I may not have had it at tdc when readjusting it.
so I’ve done a valve adjustment, looked for anything loose that could be making the noise under the car, and I’m all out of ideas at this point. Lma’s are already skunk 2 so I doubt that’s the issue. Looks like I need to find an oem distributor and see what happens.
