Driver side door latch failed, can I cut open outer door skin to access mechanism?
I got a 6th gen accord. The driver-side door latch failed. I cannot open the door from the inside or from the outside.
Since it's a beater vehicle, I do not care about the look.
Can I cut an opening on the outer door skin to access the latch mechanism, in order to open the door? Once the door's open, I can then pop the plastic inner panel to replace the latch mechanism.
After I fix the latch mechanism, I can get a piece of sheet metal and cover the opening with pop rivets, and maybe add some water proofing sealant....

Yes and no. On the outside of the door skin, you have another thicker layer of steel to strengthen the door from a side impact. So yes, it is easier to get to the lock mechanism from the outside, but this will weaken the structure of the door. From the inside, there is less room to work and also has an internal metal framework. Either way can be difficult.
*These pics are from a 1990 Accord, but it will be pretty similar to any other door.

Take off the door panel from inside the car so you can work on the latch with the drilling procedure Honda recommends. Just do all the normal steps for removing the panel. The holder that is obscured by the dash is just a plastic push-in type thing. It's bigger than the pins on the outer edge of the panel, but it will release when you pull the panel out from under it. My latch failed in 2021 and I took out that panel with no damage to it. I did end up snapping the tweeter off of a cheap speaker, but later I even superglued that back on. I still had a hell of a time getting the door open, but I didn't mutilate that panel or cut any holes in the door or pillar.
