Default HID Retrofit - EG Hatch - Morimoto H1 Mini From TRS

After taking a look at different options, I thought my best choice for improving headlight output for my little EG hatch was to get a set of Spec D housings w/ smooth (non-fluted), glass lens and the Morimoto Mini H1 HID retrofit kit.

I got these Spec D housings: https://specdtuning.com/1992-1995-ho...ng-clear-lens/

And these Morimotos from TRS: https://www.theretrofitsource.com/bi...e-3?quantity=1

The goal is to get the projector into the housing:

The Mini H1s now come with the Moto Holder - I remember when TRS came out with this, they were pretty psyched:

Alright - let's get the housing in the oven!

The housings shipped w/ a protective film - nice!

I removed the city light before baking.

I removed the rubber boot and 4 clips. It turns out there are 5 clips!

I heated the oven to 240F and then placed the housing in for 10 minutes. That got the adhesive softened up, but I put the housing back in for another 10 minutes and then I was able to separate the glass from the plastic.

Victory!

EDIT - It turns out that I did not need to do this to remove the halogen bulb light shield - your scenario may vary!

Next, remove the inner reflector bowl from the back of the housing. It is held by some long screws that you access from the back:

You can see the back of the reflector bowl, where the projector will mount, here:

These 2 pieces must separate.

These screws take forever. I should have used the the drill.

Separate!

Next - remove this light shield.

The light shield and bulb holder unscrew from the back:

This shield is in the way of the projector.

Shield and bulb holder unscrew from the back:

Now we have a bare reflector!

Now it is time to install the projector:

All the pieces:

The Moto Holder and lock ring need to come off.

H4 gasket goes on.

I ran the high/low wires through the city light opening in the reflector bowl.

Make sure gasket looks good.

Place H4 adapter.

Tighten lock ring!

And here we are!

Next up - fitting the halos to the shrouds.

Those look pretty good, loving how everything is pretty much just screwing together.

They really made it easy to do.

What scares me is carpet fuzzies all over the lens

As long as I can get the housings sealed up w/o dog hair enclosed - I will call that winning!
I have some optical cloths I will wipe the lens with.

I didn't get a chance to do anything else over the weekend, but I have been thinking about this project.

First, I definitely want to add the factory headlight warning that our friend @deschlong wrote up so well: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...folks-2749779/

My second thought is about the reflector bowl, and how it mounts in the housing on these long screws.

The more I think about this, the more I feel like these are for adjusting or aiming the light output w/in the housing. So to get the aim correct, you want the reflector bowl positioned properly in the housing, and then the housing needs to be aimed correctly on the vehicle.

Does anyone have experience with this?

How to use these adjusting screws for the reflector bowl?

Other than proper aiming, I feel like my biggest unknowns are fitting the halos to the shrouds, and wiring.

That is exactly what you want to do.

Put your car on a level surface and aim the rotational axis of the projectors so they’re level.

Then you’ll aim the beam elevation and the widths of the steps with the factory adjuster so they’re true.

When you say factory adjuster, are you talking about the adjustment for the housings? Or the adjustors for the reflector bowls in the housings?
I figure I have to get the reflector bowls as close as possible when I put them back in the housings. It took forever to loosen them!
Thanks!

Reflector bowls. Your housings shouldn’t have any adjustments?

I am glad I asked - I thought the adjustment for headlights happened here - at these slots:

I thought these slots were how you adjust the headlights.

Purple is your horizontal adjustment. Blue circles the vertical adjuster. Insert a #2 phillips screwdriver to the geared-looking side of the adjuster wheel from the green arrowed direction. That's why those screws are so long.

Report back how good/bad the adjustment range is on these. Some of the aftermarket lights I've run into are pretty sadly way out to lunch.

@spAdam - thanks.
I wish I had not unscrewed the reflector bowl, those screws are long AF.
I looked at the DS housing (I thought I would just do one at a time) and I think I can remove the shield w/o removing the reflector bowl, so I will have the 2nd housing as a reference.

I thought I would take a look at the halos:

The halo and associated relay. They don't look to be from Morimoto.

Better lighting, and showing the length of the leads off the halo.

Detail of the connector between the halo and relay.

The shroud and halo:

The bare shroud - there are no provisions to mount halos on these.

Test fit of the halo on the shroud.

The halos have loops to secure them to the shroud.

The wiring off the back of the halo will not allow it to mount flat on the shroud.

More detail of the wiring.
