Hey all, new user here. 02 Civic 1.7 vtec, manual trans.
This car is new to me and I have the trans out due to a bad input shaft bearing. I noticed a lot of play in the flywheel. It is the OEM Honda flywheel. I would like to stay with it if possible, otherwise I'll go Exedy.
Can someone please look at the attached pics and video, then tell me if resurfacing this flywheel and putting it back in is a bad idea? The machine shop local to me said they wouldn't resurface it on their lathe because it was too loose. The 'mounting plate' (I am not sure what to call it) with two rivets is the piece in question. Thank you.
Is that a dual mass flywheel? Did not know the Civic ever had that option on the gas engines.
Probably best to replace that unit. Not only because the loose parts but because someone had their way with it with an angle grinder. That thing is toast.
It is not a dual mass to my knowledge. Looks identical to other OEM Honda flywheels online.
You are both right about the nasty scuffs and cuts from someone grinding it. Looking back that probably explains some of the poor feeling engagement I was getting. Just wanted input from some more experienced Honda guys. Appreciate you both. I'll order the Exedy wheel to go with my new clutch. Thanks for such quick responses.
If you hear grumbling/grinding with your foot off the clutch, but it goes away when you depress the clutch pedal to floor, it is likely your input shaft bearing.
If it is the other way around, with the noise appearing when the clutch is depressed but goes away when you let your foot off, it is your TOB (throw out bearing/release bearing).
There are a number of threads out there on diagnosing the noise; I replaced my alternator and A/C compressor thinking I had located the problem before I got wise and started testing things properly. Hope that helps!
it does help really don’t wanna pull the trans apart it was my first clutch job literally 2 days ago but the shaft has 0 play whatsoever so am I wrong ? Everything else was replaced whole clutch kit could it still be bad?

I am not sure what you are asking. Are you saying your input shaft bearing is showing symptoms of failure? Replacing your clutch and pressure plate does not address the input shaft. Yes, the bearing could be bad even if you had no play in the shaft. Looseness is just one symptom of a bearing failure. Going off of the noises you get when testing with the clutch pedal is probably your best bet, seeing how so many on here have experienced the same thing.
I would also encourage you to watch Ericthecarguy on Youtube. He has two videos on our year/model of Civic. One is the clutch replacement, the other is the input shaft bearing replacement. Just look up 'Ericthecarguy civic clutch' or 'Ericthecarguy civic transmission'.
I used his video for the clutch that’s why I’m confused of this noise because when the pilot and throwout were bad I replaced everything while I had the transmission off but now it has that noise , maybe it just needs to be broken in
