Stripped Rack & Pinion Return Line Threads
Vehicle: 2000 Accord 4 Cyl
Hey Guys, I am currently dealing with an issue regarding my rack and pinion. I had just removed the 2 lines attached to the rack and pinion and when I tried to install the new lines I noticed my return line wasn't threading in correctly so I checked and saw that it was cross threaded. I am going to remove the rack and I have done some research on how to fix it, but I want to ensure I do the job right. I am thinking about trying to rethread and install an insert into the slot. The only thing is it's my first time rethreading anything and I'm not sure what size tap and die (don't really know the correct term) I need to do it . I'm open to other suggestions as well to make this go a lot smoother. I would also vacuum out any debris to not contaminate the p.s system.

I would certainly try to tap/thread the rack and if you need to fix the hose, you use a die.
There are bottom end taps and pointed taps.Pointed start easier into a hole, but bottom end taps (blunt) are some times needed in a shallow hole.
Keep in mind that you are dealing with metric threads.
If you take the part into Napa auto, even just the hose (they are normally a little more informed on mechanics) they can find and sell you the proper size. Ace hardware also sells Irwin brand at a good price. Do not use harbor freight tap/die. There is a difference between accurate thread size and you will get a better fit with a decent tool to help avoid a leak.
If you are worried about a leak, use some Teflon tape on the hose threads as you screw it in. Pay attention the the wrap direction as one way the tape unscrews from the threads. Be sure not to get any into the rack or it could cause an issue.
Tap (bolt)
Die (nut)
Helicoil ( replaceable threads)
It is best to watch a couple of videos on how to do this. If you leave any metal shavings inside the rack, it can tear things up pretty quickly. Compressed air helps to blow the junk out. Sometimes i use wheel bearing grease to capture the metal shavings.
