D15b2 Block D16y8 Head
I’m buying a Honda civic with a blown engine and i want to swap out the
D16Y8 block with a D15b2 as i got the engine for free and just trying to get it running learn as it’s my first time trying a project like this I’ve been researching and want to know what’s needed to make this possible
Is it possible to use the composted from the ex and only swap out the block. I’m also not sure if i need a 104 tooth timing belt? or if the B16Y8 belts would work?
The reason i’m changing the block is I was told the engine is blown and it’s reflecting on the price
Any and all advice is appreciated
Edit: Do I also need different head studs that match the Y8 head?

Yes to the head studs, you need one Y8 head bolt if I recall as the Y8 has a high spot and you will need the 1 longer bolt. You also have to us the B2 cam gear if I recall to fix a half tooth off problem. And you will need to transfer the timing marks from the Y8 gear to the b2 gear to get your proper mechanical timing for the 12* BTDC timing the OBD2 ECU requires. To do that line up the key part of the gears and then copy the Y8 marks onto the b2 gear with the key way's lined up.
You are doing the mini build of a Y8. However you are doing this in the OBD2 Y8 car so will have to focus on the 12* BTDC timing instead of the OBD1 16* BTDC timing.
You can read about the Y8 head mini me in the FAQ. There is some great information there about the half tooth variance. I don't remember right off hand what timing belt you need, I think it is the 104 tooth belt but could be wrong there. Your options are 103, 104 and 106 tooth belts from the OBD1 series, no clue what the 96-00's use.

Here might be some helpful info for you.. and yes for using the Y8 studs from what I've read..

However, now i’ve been made aware the d15b2 tensioner and the y8 tensioner have different OD’s but if i’m using a smaller timing belt because the y8 head is shorter then should that fix that problem?
Thank you for the help.
Seems like you would have to use the tensioner specific to the block, use the 104 tooth belt to help from using the shorter head and use a adjustable cam gear to help compensate left over timing difference due to the shorter block.
The tensioner doesn't fix the half tooth variance from the shorter deck height of the B2 block. That is why you have to switch the cam gear. They are indexed a half tooth off of each other.
This is clearly documented and can be found in the FAQ under the Mini-Me section. This obd1 bock with an obd2 head has been well documented. The FAQ is stickied at the top of this 92-00 civic/del sol sub forum.
