Default Which of the civic em1 wing mirrors are closeable?

I’m in the U.K. but I think the wing mirrors are same as America.

i always thought you could not close both wing mirrors however I remember I closed one a while ago.

my passenger side mirror is currently broken and needs repair so I don’t want to turn it and test in case more damage. I have the driver side mirror(U.K. is right hand drive)a push but it wasn’t turnings and fear of loosing another mirror I stopped.

Which of the wing mirrors can be closed in when parking or are they both closeable in which case is there a special way to close them?

thanks

USDM mirror sets aren't folding.
JDM/EDM mirror sets are manual or power folding.

hi. Can you explain what you mean here?

i am in U.K. so I imagine that’s edm. I have tried and They do not fold manually don’t want to break it. Would that mean they’re power folding in which case how do I activate it?

thanks

I think you have manual folding mirror set in your car.
You can't fold your set because dirt has accumulated there and no one has folded or cleaned them for a long time, probably.
Power folding mirror sets were factory fitted to the Honda Civic VI EK9 TypeR only. If you want to have power folding mirror set in your car you'll can buy this set and replace that. You need a mirror set with motors and a switch with folding button. If power folding mirror set will be from Honda Civic VI EK9 Typer pre-facelift (1996 - 1998) you will need relay box for that too. If power folding mirror set will be from Honda Civic VI EK9 Typer facelift (1999 - 200) relay box will be inside switch I think.

hi guys

i posted about this topic a while ago, car was dumped but want to revisit now. Here are pics of the left side wing mirror. Uk driver is right hand side.

I have since found that the driver side mirror(right) does manually turn in and out. However the left side now broken mirror does not turn. Can anyone tell why and if it’s due to dirt how and where should I aim the cleaning? Do I need to take the whole set apart??!! Before repairing the case the first issue is to get it to turn. Even with the case broken I’m trying to manually turn it by holding that spring etc but it just won’t.

secondly, it’s broken because I came and found it like that one day. Probably someone tried to turn it but as it wouldn’t turn they broke it. I put a red arrow to show roughly the plastic has broken, I guess I could super glue this back on. However even if I get it to turn it could just break again due to weakness of the glue under constant turning pressure. I could also just glue it back on and never turn it again ie leave it open when parked while closing the right side which will be on traffic side.

so
1. Why is it not turning and how can I repair it(preferably without buying a new wing mirror).
2. If I can get it to turn should I just superglue the casing on?
3. If I can’t get it to turn should I just superglue the casing on and to the car since for now at least I can live without one mirror moving.

thanks

the left mirror would not turn in or out.

In my opinion, the left mirror mechanism is permanently damaged and it can't be repaired effectively by gluing.
The best solution to this situation will be to buy a working mirror and replace it.
This mirror was permanently damage/borken because it was probably left unassembled for a very long time.

Even if you are right in that the folding mechanism will not work so needs a replacement, as you can see I have managed to push it into place. It’s still out of place a bit but looks liveable. I can live without folding it, why can’t Ieave it as in the pic and glue it in since I don’t need the folding feature?

thanks.

Because the problem will be finding the right glue that will permanently immobilize the broken parts of the mirror mechanism.

I know what I'm saying/writing about that.
I have repaired about 30-40 sets of such mirrors in my life, restoring them to factory condition and I know that gluong the maechanism isn't a good solution. It will be have to be done time to time due to body car vibrations.
If you want to glue this mirror from time to time, you can try it. I'm a supporter of effective repairs and forgetting about the problems, rather than repeating the same thing from time to time to no avail.

Any coupe or hatch mirror, easily answered by Google.

Get one from an EJ9 or something. Mirrors on my EM1 are adjustable and heated. Not sure about yours. Anyway, just get one thats the same as yours. Wiring (if any) will then be the same.

You can take the mirror from all Honda Civic VI EJ/EK (1996-2000) pre-facelift/facelift hatchback/coupe LHD. Engine doesn't metter.
Mirror from Honda Civic VI EJ/EK (1996-2000) pre-facelft/facelift sedan LHD/RHD and from Honda Civic VI MA/MB/MC (1996-2000) pre-facelift/facelift liftback/aerodeck LHD/RHD don't fit.
