Default Valve lash rookie

My 97 Accord SE (2.2 non vetch) has been the victim of my valve lashing abilities. Yep I'm a newb. But , it did run like a sore behind ape, just a lil lovey at idle. But power like NEVER before. I thought I took my time w/the feelers, but might be a schosche tight on exhausts. My question is. I know even less about timing with a light and btw I do not have a light. My oil light was BARELY trying to flickr once but never stayed on. And the Che eng light was blinking to beat the band(m-fie) codes random and on 2-3. WTH. Please help me it's our only ride as my Silverado is out w/tranny problems... he identifies as a sb350 automatic 4l60e

as an aside, I believe Honda only recommends adjusting valve lash as part of normal tuning subsequent to head reconditioning, and that's it!

everyone screws up their first attempt adjusting valve lash. overly tight valves may cause of p030x, so you probably overtightened one or two—and it's probably just one or two.

sooo...pop off the covers and go at it again; but then you already knew this, of course. with feeler gage, screwdriver and the box wrench in hand, repeat this mantra: "it's better to hear valves than smell them."

hey!! You were correct!! Got er done! No more codes! But I still am not clear on "ignition timing"? The under hood sticker is missing, but I thought I read somewhere it's 14-16 advanced. Is this something I need to check? I swear! If I would of had a camera rolling throughout this whole debacle, starting with timing belt and wp, I could have been the latest craze on YouTube !!

Basically get a timing light, connect it's ignition wire clamp to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire (furthest from distributor at "Front" of engine), start the car (some lights need to be grounded too with a clamp on the battery, do that if thats the case) and point the light at the engine crankshaft pulley right near where the plastic mark on the timing cover is. You want the mark on the pulley to line up with the mark on the timing cover. Losen the 3 12mm bolts that mount the distributor to the engine and rotate the distributor to change timing. Its only adjustable by a small amount in either direction. Ignition timing is critical to fuel efficiency, emissions and performance. Its good to check every once in in awhile.

Thanks so much. I'm just wingin all this by ear but having a good time learning! Thanks to you-tube and you guys ! I really do appreciate it. The next thing I want to try is to get a cylinder head from pull a part and rebuild it myself just to have ready when or if needed. I still have research to do as to what kind but I think the 98 -02 accords had a lot better intakes and heads that could switch right over (f23a?). Anyways, any suggestions or tips would be greatly welcomed!
