Was wondering if this is a good or bad deal: 2000 SI 145k original miles. Needs paint, nothing mechanical that I can see wrong with the car. Other than the paint. And a nice interior cleaning. Dude wants 8k. Clean title. Basically he's the second owner, only had it for a year. Has all records for dealer service.
Not bad, as long as all the vin numbers are on the panels and are original. I'd still ask around $7k that's more realistic. A real SI is hard to find though. All stock even more rare..
looks like the rt qtr panel was refinished before.
hopefully it was during his ownership that way he will possibly have photos of the prior damages.
paint and body is expensive. you have to put that in consideration when buying the car.
lets say it will cost you 5k to repair and refinish to your liking. that means you just purchased a 13k car.
for me, i would spend the extra and find one that is clean to me.
8k that needs 5k in paint work.....
or 10-12k with clean paint just minor nicks
the condition of the exterior/interior will kinda show you how the owner cares for everything else
Being in the autobody industry has changed my perspective when looking for a car.

NOT having been in the paint & body industry (so always having to pay for body work), I couldn't agree more. Mechanical bits are usually fairly straightforward to refresh, right up to re-doing a bottom end or something (as long as it just needs a rebuild, not actually broken). Body work is expensive and hard to get done properly.
Looks almost entirely stock and intact, which is awesome. Interior looks to be in really good shape too. That quarter looks reworked for sure. If it's rust or major crash damage, I'd probably dip out even if the car is mechanically mint. At least have a good body guy look over it and see if it's a total basket case under there. If it just needs a good quality respray and some dent removal, I'd say go for it. Finding a 22+ year old Honda that doesn't need paint is nearly impossible anyway. You have some negotiation room, I think.
