Default 2002 Accord Resto-mod engine and transmission compatability

I imagine some of y'all have seen my other post's regarding performance with the F23 ( https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...ratch-3365499/ ). So now I have shifted gears and have decided that I am willing to do an engine swap. If I were to buy a H22 engine, would a 1998 Accord EX M/T fit it? Additionally, since the original plan was to use the F23 engine, I bought a Fidanza Flywheel, and ACT clutch & pressure plate. Will the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate still fit? If I bought a Prelude tranny, would those Accord pieces fit? What is compatible in regards to the abovementioned plan?

Flywheel, clutch & pressure plate for '98 Accord M/T.

Is F20B a good idea?

F20B is a nice engine but parts support is much more limited than H22 since F20B was never sold in the US.

I would be inclined to go H if you are going that route.

I can't say for sure whether the flywheel and clutch etc would work but i think it SHOULD work. Can probably cross reference compatibility part numbers to see but i believe them to be be the same.

All H/F series clutches/flywheels/etc are interchangeable. The transmissions are all interchangeable as well with the exception of the ATTS Prelude transmissions, and a very early H2A5 model from a 90-91 Accord.

F20B support is not limited at all. The engine is externally identical to an H22 in all the areas that matter. All bolt ons, etc will work just the same as if it were an H22. The engine internals are different but again support is not limited and that would only be something to consider if you were planning an engine build anyway.

The best option for a swap in your chassis is an H23A blue top. I'm sure they are getting a little pricey though. They make more power and torque than a lightly modded H22 out of the box.

I haven’t ruled out the H22, but n fact I would probably go that route if I knew for certain that my parts are compatible. How do I go about cross referencing parts?

H23 or H22 is a great option. F20B can work if the price is a deal.

All of them will feel much nicer than f23

Agreed. Although I believe the F23 has a bad rap which IMO isn’t warranted. That said, I’m convinced that there’s simply more you can do with the F20b/H22

F23 itself doesnt have a bad rap. the auto transmissions have a horrible rap, and the lack of aftermarket parts suppot compared to other honda SOHC engines has a bad rep.

I mean, you COULD turbo the F23 but you'd have a hard time finding choices for parts like manifolds etc

H23A blue top is basically a factory stroked H22. The later 00-01 engines come with a PDE head that was used on the Euro-R/Type-S H22 engines. They regularly make 210whp+ with nothing more than bolt ons and a tune.

Yeah lol, the auto tragic’s on the f23 were hilariously bad.

BTW…. does the f20b have the capacity to be boosted? I’ve heard h22a does…

F20B is a better candidate for turbo setups than an H22. I was regularly making 350-400whp on stock F20Bs for years.

Yeah, my plan is to boost it. I think you’ve sold me on the F20B, thank you for the knowledge and advice. That said, I’m a sales consultant for Lexus. I can afford any one of our cars but I prefer a 20 year old car with a 25 year old engine. There’s nothing quite like Honda performance.

I am leasing my wife a 2021 RX350 and she absolutely loves it, but unfortunately Lexus doesn’t offer a stick shift, nor are there cars performance oriented. Hence why I’m so amped up about the potential of my 20 year old honda 👊

If you don't care about budget then just do a K swap if you plan to go turbo. That way you don't have to build the engine for it to handle high horsepower reliably. H/F series are much more fragile in that regard. H series in particular like to break ringlands because of overly tight factory tolerances but all H/F series have a pretty hard stock connecting rod limit of about 350-400whp. K series will do 500+ all day and not complain.

I already ruled out the k series because of the parts I have already. Besides, the F20 bolts right on and I’m good with the power potential.

Looks like you made up your mind. Consider resleeving the F20 if you plan to boost it then and be sure to document the build here!

Forgive my ignorance but what is re-sleaving?

F20B has standard cast iron sleeves. They do not have to be replaced to run a forged piston like in an H series.

For 300-350whp you can leave the engine completely stock.

400whp+, a simple forged rod/piston build will suffice.

500-700whp, CSS block treatment would be required, but the factory sleeves are still retained.

700+, high horsepower CSS treatment or replacement sleeves required.

Can you give me a Layman’s term example of rod/piston build? Do you mean upgrade to H beam rods? 🤔

Basically, yes. A "rod/piston" build is just replacing the factory rods and pistons with better aftermarket forged options.

What about cam’s? I was thinking about F20C cam’s…. Or would a aftermarket choice make more sense? I’m new to this haha

Thanks for this.

I always thought that only the SOHC F series had cast iron sleeves. I didn't realise that it extended to the F20B (bluetop DOHC). All of the literature points to the F20B as just being a destroked H22A, so I assumed it also used FRM liners/sleeves similar to its "big" brother.

Very interesting

Cam profiles have to be matched well to the intended engine. I can't say for certain but i'd assume that H22 cams and F20B cams will be closely related so you can explore the possibilities there. Would have to cross reference part numbers etc though.

Not finding these honda performance cams as easy to come by as I used to. but a few companies certainly make. They can also regrind your existing cams if you wanted to
