P740 error code options
2002 Honda Civic EX, 160,000 miles. New tranny at 79,000. VIN shows car made in Canada (2HGES…). Car really runs great. In fact I got 38 and 41 mpg in the last two fill ups. It doesn’t shift rough. Ive checked the dip stick. It is seating tight. I have emptied the tranny fluid 3 times recently. Levels are fine. No burnt smell in the old fluid.
I get the P740 error code when hitting the open road at 60 plus for 5 minutes. This is the torque converter clutch circuit malfunction diagnostic time code (TDC). Nothing weird happens when P740 comes on.
So the car got a new tranny at 79K miles. I just got the car, so I don’t know the history of if this is new or a persistent code since the new tranny. Ive read some interesting threads about the Canadian Civics and something about the new tranny maybe having a wrong number of teeth, creating a mismatch. Sounded plausible, but above my pay grade.
So my question is basically what is the harm of just ignoring this code as long as it is symptom-less. I can read codes with my phone and clear them easily enough. I really can’t afford to drop a new tranny in it. I’d love to just monitor it and see how it goes. Go ahead, beat me up if this is foolish, but at the same time, if it has some merit, please let me know as well. I can handle the truth. Many thanks in advance.
