92 distributor replacement question
Hi, I have used this forum as a reference for years and finally signed up today to ask a question. I did a quick search but couldn't find an answer to my question I apologize is this topic has been covered before. I am replacing my distributor on my 92 LX. I am getting a OBD code 4 (crank position sensor) and code 8 (top dead center sensor). From my research both those are located in the distributor so I bought a new one and a timing light. Anyways, in my hanyes manual it states the following regarding the removal of the old distributor: "Remove the distributor cap and turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing toward the number one spark plug terminal." I have watched several videos about this process for my specific make, model and year. None of the videos show this, nor does anyone mention it. Is that necessary? Thoughts? Cant I just take the old distributor out (without moving the crankshaft) put the new one in and then time it? I don't see the purpose of that step. But im pretty basic regarding my in depth knowledge. I just fix myself as needed. Thanks for any insight!
No, not really. The distributor can only go in one way. Make sure the end of the distributor shaft is aligned with the end of the cam. As you'll see, the lugs on the end of the dizzy shaft are offset to one side, so match them up to the slots on the cam and you should be fine.
