D16y8 vs Turboed D15z1 (vx engine)
Been thinking of giving my 92 civic vx some more power, dont know if I should swap in a D16Y8 or get the stock engine rebuild and get a turbo kit for it. I originally wanted the D16Y8 because its the most powerful D series engine (excluding the 1.7 liters from 01-05) and still gets good mileage (up to 30 city 35/36HW in a vehicle that weights 150+ lbs). But then i considered just getting a small turbo kit and running it on a low/mid PSI so I get around the same power as the D16Y8 and hopefully similar mpg's or higher. I care about the torque numbers being similar more than the hp because I usually keep my RPMs between 1750-3500. I do drive my car on slightly on the faster side ,I dont thrash it but I do like to go pretty quick, usually 10 over the speed limit and 15-30 over around the turns/corners. Do you guys think turboing the civic VX engine that makes stock 90 hp/98 ft-lbs and gets up to 44 city/51 HW would get better mpg than the D16Y8 with 127HP/106tq and getting 30city 36HW. Also if I swap in a D16 I plan on buying a crate engine from jegs, it will not be some cheap 500$ engine with 300k miles on it. And lastly I know this swap or turbo will not make it fast and would at tops make it have the power of a modern day civic, I just want some more power so i dont have have it revved so high when I want to have fun and not negatively effect the handling or make the MPG's be terrible. My thought was also that with a slightly more powerful engine I wont need to be on the pedal so much especially on all the hills around here, but anyways let me know what you guys think, thank you.
I think the most practical way would be to find a d16 and swap that in there and do your basic bolt ons. I think boosting the car will make things more complicated for you in the long run. Better yet swap a B series in there if you can find one for a decent price.
But the VX has some really trick features like roller cam followers.
The down side is everything in the rotating assembly was made as small and light as possible and won't tolerate extra torque.
Not saying it can't be done but know it will be expensive to do correctly.

alright thank you guys I appreciate it. I think I will go with the D16Y8 from jegs. I hear what you guys are saying about the B series swaps and I was considering it but I currently get 31-35 MPG in my civic vx which again gets up to 44/51. In my old 95 del sol S I got about 30.5mpg which can get up to 35/41. So I feel like swapping in a B18C1 that gets up to 25/31 I would probably be getting around 20 mpg(same as my 89' yota pickup), maybe 25 mpg tops. and yes the thats in a car that weighs 430lbs more stock, so maybe the mpgs would go up some more but it wouldnt be to high, with the D16Y8 I expect 25 minimum and probably around 28-32 daily driving)
