So Ive run into a little bit of an issue that’s causing the car to jump in rpm from about 1k rpm to 1.6k rpm pretty rapidly, it will jump, hold for about a second and a half and dip back down before going up again.

This isn’t a new issue as it existed before I bought it and replaced the head gasket, but after the head gasket swap it stopped for a short period of time, the fans spun when the car was turned on and would sometimes stay on after the car was turned off. Now, the fans don’t spin at all at idle and the surging continues.

My theory is something electrical. The previous owners ran through this car and it’s riddled with funky looking wiring, disassembled interior and miscellaneous cables. The battery is old, and the day it wasn’t misbehaving, the battery was at very low capacity. This is why i think either the battery or alternator could be causing issues, with a jump in current as the engine surges etc etc. It might be happening because the fans aren’t turning on? Another theory is the temperature sensor for the coolant, it could be sending a funny signal to the computer but i’m not sure. Any help or suggestions is much appreciated, im at the point where i’ll try everything so leave any suggestion.

 

Before you go too deep looking for the solution. Have you tried the common Honda idle surge repair?
