Weird electrical performance 2001 Civic
I’ve had my 01 Civic EX for about nine years, it’s just hit 195k, and I’m gonna drive it ‘till the wheels fall off, mostly because it’s a manual and it’s paid for
For about a year it’s been doing weird things with randomly not starting but jumping easily/instantly. I carry a battery jump thing, not sure what you call it but it’s awesome and has made the issue only mildly annoying.
And yes, the battery has been tested and is fine, less than a year old. Alternator is fine, too. Cables not corroded that I can see.
For a few years it’s had a temperamental speedometer, sometimes I hit a bump wrong and it stops working — but since it’s a manual and I’ve put nearly 100k miles on it myself I don’t even really look at that, I go by feel and RPMs.
Last few months it’s been throwing random dummy lights at me, one day it’ll be the SRS, the next the ABS, CEL, whatever it is will go away at random, throw a new one — no pattern at all.
A few times if I shut it off before I turn off the headlights it makes that chittering chattering noise in the dash where all my gauges are, then won’t start without a jump.
Today it lost power in third, engine was running at idle (I think) but accelerator did nothing, switched to second, same thing. I shut it off, it starts again immediately and then acts like nothing happened. (It’s starting to remind me of my least favorite ex 😭
It did not seem like any sort of transmission issue I’ve ever had; the transmission was rebuilt about 60k miles back.
It pulled this stunt once more before I got to work.
Any ideas?
