Default Up to 16.5v and fluctuates. Overcharging? Civic 99

Once it occurs, Lights start dimming from interior and exterior of the car including SRS and most of the time the stereo shuts off. This occurs every 2-6 months. It’s definitely not the battery since it pretty new, and this problem happened quite some time now, so I want to get it fixed Since I will traveling to a different city this month. I’m assuming it’s the alternator, but is there other areas I should check first?

so you're getting that voltage reading with a load on the electrical system? Max should be no more than 14.7V DC even with a new battery. What does it read with just the battery, no key inserted??

Yes. And I will have to double check when I get home from work.

IF that's the case, the alternator may be the culprit. The inner windings may be going bad and overcharging the battery, hence the high voltage reading.

Did the testing just now. Voltage is 12.95v when the car is not turned on. I’ll replace the alternator later when it cools down and hopefully it solves my problem. Thank you

the symptoms are leaning towards the alternator. Good luck and give an update

just got done replacing alternator. Car feels good, no random rpm rev, voltage is steady, lights weren’t dimming, stereo didn’t shut off, srs didn’t randomly pop up. Thanks again! Problem has been fixed

Some alternators are easy to rebuild and a whole lot cheaper than to replace. Mainly it's just the brushes wear out I think they're under $20... couple screws and voila! It should last quite a while..
or rebuild the whole thing for maybe $50 and make it new again.

If it is overcharging, the voltage regulator is faulty.
