Default What is this plastic cover on transmission?

So the car is a 2006 accord 2.4L VP.

Does anyone know what this plastic cover in the transmission is for? Is there some kind of sensor in there? Given there is a fluid leak there, will the transmission drain if taking it off?

THis is looking in the left wheel well. you can see the cv shaft on the right side of the picture.

thanks.

It's the cover for the transmission range switch/gear position sensor assembly.

The oil seal probably went bad.

Awesome, thanks for the help! I'll have to open it up and see what things are like. From what i can tell, there is nothing else in the area that would leak tranny oil.

You might want to find the service manual to help remove and reinstall the range switch.

The shift level should be put in neutral when uninstalling, and the switch should be held in the neutral position with a 2.0mm feeler gauge blade or equivalent during reinstall.

There are other important things to watch out for as specified in the service manual.
