Default What caused this? Burnt up oil or gas on pistons and valves

The engine is a b20 bottom
GSR head

When I put it together the last time I didn’t’ get it properly resurfaced. It was pretty good for a while but recently started leaking out the head gasket.

so I decided to take the engine out and take it apart to just rebuild it and resurface it properly, but I noticed how burnt up it looked inside, there is oil all over the head gasket which I expected so no surprise there but both the pistons and valves were all charred up. The injectors were all dirty as well

Was just wondering if it is anything worse, can someone help me out, I will provide any other details if needed. I also really push this car, it’s NA all stock parts expect arp headstuds. Full bolt ons

Well there is combustion events going on in the cylinder so it’s not going to stay clean very long in there especially if you’re just driving it on the street lol. If you take an engine apart and the pistons are shiny, that usually means there’s coolant getting in the cylinder which is a bad thing

He's got a perfect example of what that looks like on the exhaust side of the pistons.

No that’s not a “shiny piston”. The whole thing will usually be shiny metal haha. That looks to be on the intake side so it’s probably just alittle fuel wash. Most of us run 20 some year old injectors which don’t atomize like they probably used to which isn’t an insane deal as all cylinders look similar. Cylinder bore condition would be #1 concern over anything
