DIY turbo: what is missing from this ????
found this: http://www.tooez.com/turbo/
Might be old news and probably is but has anyone else done a semi DIY type turbo setup for street use? I would love to hear some feedback from those that chose not to go with a kit and put together there own. A good friend of mine is preparing to upgrade the turbo on his eclipise and was going to give it to me if it could be used in anyway...just curious.
feedback needed.
TIA

some of his prics are pretty low.
for example: he says 200 for a manifold. its more like 350.
and he didnt include the air intake .
other then that its a really good article.

for those that have boosted....do you see anything missing from this setup that would allow for a better running/opperating engine?
Also, im considering blancing out the crank while the motor is out as well as the connecting rods. Any objections to this??

my opinion is:
you make to many compromises on a cheap - *** turbo setup.
do engineer it properly, you spend too much money
a greddy turbo kit (or similar) is a good compromise between cost and properly turboing a car.

ok, im listening to your thoughts. Please go into further detail on what you were mentioning. Are you speaking from experence? I think that in many cases unless you get the the hook up you are paying for alot of name. IF the proper parts are used with correct compensation for fuel needs and consumption as well as adiquate ignition then it can be done properly.
If you can't afford to spend the big bucks (well bigger respectively) to build your turbo, then you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you are lucky, then good for you; but are you willing to risk your entire motor by saving a few bucks here and there?
My advice is, depending on how old your motor is and how much mileage is on it, redo the bottom end THEN go turbo. My .02

My turbo kit has cost me about $800 total, intercooler included.

Well, when it comes time to finally put the engine back in the car with will be a zero miles rebuilt engine with fresh internals, balanced crank, robs and honed cylinder walls. Thats just for now, we havnt broken it down yet but as of purchase, it had around 50K on the clock.
Used stuff:
TE04H ( i know
)
Audi 9000 FMIC
New stuff:
Turbo manifold from group buy
Vortech 12:1 FMU
Vortech inline pump (might use a 255lph dsm intank i have tho)
Mandrel bent pipe from jcwhitney
Home depot hose connectors
fabricating downpipe myself
Turbo XS mbc/lowes pressure release valve (not sure which i wanna use)
Stuff I alreadyhad from previous cars:
Turbo XS mbc
Turbo XS BOV
Greddy EGT guage
VDO Boost guage
I might have forgotted somethin, who knows

I would run your freshly built engine for a awhile with out boost.... Other than that you have everthing need to run maybe 5-6psi safely.
You want more power look at big injectors and a AFC, which gets rid of that fish tank check valve setup, which I had problems with at over 6psi (ie blowing out of the manifold) as long as you don't want more than 11psi.
Lastly it looks more or less complete, I would look at adding a Walboro fuel pump or something (GSS317, GSS347) cause your 12:1 FMU puts your fuel pressure over a 100psi which kills your stock pump. J&S safeguards are good investments, best one I ever made.
