Need help with Vtec situation on Unfinished Project
Sorry, new to the Honda tech forums so go easy on me.
I recently purchased my sister's 92 Honda Civic Lx. The original owner before my sister did an engine swap for a d15b vtec-e, installed a cold air intake and straight piped it, but that's all I can tell. It has P06 ECU and P07-1 head.
My sister told me the guy before her was building it as a turbo project but had to sell it for rent. As far as I know, it's unfinished.
Specifically, the engine seems to have a problem going into vtec, has low power, the engine can't go above ~4.5k rpm while under load, and it has a misfire. The exhaust reeks of unburnt gas and the transmission shifts pretty rough throughout the gears.
While flushing out the block I noticed the Vtec Solenoid wasn't connected to anything, nor any connectors or wires near by.
Could it be the original owner swapped the engine without replacing the ecu/ engine harness?
Other than everything above, the car runs and drives pretty fine. It did have a few overheating issues and a hose spit, but I replaced it and plan on replacing all the coolant hoses soon.
I'm new to Hondas and working on cars in general so if anyone has any help, questions or wants pictures of anything with the car (within reason), please feel free to let me know.

From everything I have read, a P08 ecu is what you would want to use.. just need to hook up the vtec solenoid wiring to the ecu pinning. The P06 is causing you trouble.
You have either need a d15z1 ecu (p07) and the tiny intake manifold, injectors, throttle body and intake arm that fits it or you need to swap the head to a p06 non vtec.
P06 can't run the vtec e head.
P07 won't work with the non vtec manifold, injectors, throttle body, etc.
P08 won't run a vtec e engine on either low or high cam. It's for non economy single vtec only.
Why is it from every post about the exact same engine combination uses the P08 and works fine.. Strange.. this is just what I read, not know..
That's why you don't just post garbage you read. This isn't a mini me vtec swap. Someone put a vtec e head on a non vtec block and there is no way to run it with a stock obd1 computer. Read more.
No need to get your panties in a bunch.. I am still learning more about this type of stuff with ecu's myself. I am a mechanical guy who builds engines.. Don't mean to lead people in the wrong direction. Just trying to be somewhat helpful here. My bad..
its a vtec-e engine. meant for good mpg. you can probably boost to increase mpg but that all comes down to the tune
