Default Auto fluid check

I have a 2003 CR-V left-hand drive. The handbook says to check the auto transmission fluid, it must be at operating temp with the engine of. All the cars I have done this on before have the engine running. Does it make any difference or what is the correct way? Thank you

I think you answered your own question by reading the manual. Why deviate from what the manual instructed you to do?
