What to watch out for with a 2005 DX Sedan
Hello all. I seek your help in purchasing a used Honda Civic.
I am more of a mazda guy, but my family has always owned hondas. I used to daily a 9th gen Civic, and I currently have a 10th gen Civic Si. However, I have hands on experience with older mazdas.
Anyways, I will be going to look at a 2005 Civic DX Automatic. It has 133k miles on it (SoCal). It's for my girlfriend, so I just want a car that is reliable, comfortable and the power/drivetrain will last for some time.
When I go look at it, what should I look out for beyond normal used car stuff? What are common problems for this generation? Any crippling faults to be aware of? I don't mind maintaining it myself. As long as parts are fairly cheap and I don't need to unbolt the intake to do coils, I am happy. I am a newbie to these old hondas and don't want to get my girlfriend a car riddled with problems.
What would you guys make sure to look at and inspect when looking for a civic of this year and generation? Thank you all for your help.

Priorities on my list would be: failed head gasket (has it been replaced with OEM parts and head planed to flatness) and has the trans been well maintained (as in a drain and fill of Honda ATF DW-1 every 30k miles at least)?
Both these issues could easily outprice the cost of the purchase - so buyer beware.
I have a 2003 still in the family with both the above recommendations done and it is still working well.

Hi I do not have an answer for you but a question. Two questions actually given your are a mazda car. I am looking at Hondas and Toyotas and was wondering what are the "common things" to watch out for when searching for a new car? because I have no knowledge of them, I am 19 and have never owned a car in fact I just got my license LOL. Now for the second question, I was looking at some mazdas last year but stopped my search when I started seeing comments about easy rusting and fuel pumps. I did not want my wallet to take a huge hit so I stuck to the reliables. As a mazda guy what do you think are the main problems, also I live in Canada and it snows here pretty badly sometimes, should I just avoid mazdas because of that one fact?
