Default 1991 Honda civic Si 1.6L water temperature sensor?

This is the Temp sensor on my honda it has 2 wires, not 1? The jankyness is due to me breaking the connection so i rednecked it for now. To ensure i have a solid connection to the loom and the sensor. The problem is when I turn on the car the guage bounces around like a child in a bounce Castel.... and wont level out. I have tried reversing the wires, no joy. The connection to the Left that looks like a sensor with 1 wire runs down to the down pipe off the exuast.

Also the green/yellow wire sitting just behind the temp sensor! Not sure where that is supposed to be attached?

That is the temp sensor for the ECU not the gauge. You can get a pigtail for the ECU sensor (37870-PJ7-003) online to replace the missing connector. This is a digital sensor so switching the wires around is not advised. You will receive a code 6 if the sensor is not connected or if it is wired incorrectly.

Amazon Amazon

The gauge temp sending unit is a single wire connector a little higher and further rearward of the sensor shown in this picture and should be a yellow/green wire. The gauge sending unit is a thermal resistor that changes the voltage going to the gauge based on the temperature and is not digital. I suspect the disconnected yellow/green wire in the picture may be the wire for the temp gauge.

Icon5 Haynes and forms say water temp sensor has 1 wire! mine has 2 wires?

Hello all,

I have a 1991 Civic SI, Manual, 1.6L stock motor, 256k+ miles, 1 top end rebuild and a few bolt on's,

I just recently replaced the rusted out muffler, the radiator exploded on me so I replaced it, the thermostat and the temp sensor, ( the water temp sensor would read cold no matter how long I drove the car for, that's why I replaced it) the part I got from AutoZone had 2 wires, the part that was in the car has 2 wires, every thing says it should have 1? (the only single wire sensor i see is on the exhaust manifold) also now that the new one is in, the gauge cant decide where to sit its either hot or cold and when I give it throttle it levels out once I let off the gas it bounces around, and then settles on hot or cold, it appears to be holding water, I don't see any visible leaks, the upper and lower tubes get hot so I believe the pump is working. the other odd thing is the exhaust, so during the radiator replacement I had the car jacked up to burb the system, and I noticed that what looked like water pouring out of the exhaust, no smoke at idle, after burping the radiator, I took it for a drive for about an hour, it started to kick out white smoke for a little while but once I think the exhaust got hot enough it quit smoking, it seemed to run fine, but the temp sensor still bouncing around. with the temp sensor going ape ****, I hard wired the fans to a switch to ensure nothing over heats

.the picture is of the temp sensor, I broke the connector when trying to remove it, so I red-necked it back together. the connection in the lower right side of the pic with the 1 wire runs down to the exhaust manifold. the yellow/green wire below the temp sensor I have no idea what that's for.

Now I know that usually white or bluish smoke is rings or head gasket related, but they are also usually complemented, with other complications, that I have not experienced. no chug, no loss of power, and the white smoke stops after driving for a while.

To help with your help, I live in an area where the Temp is 85 degrees F year round, and about 90-110% humidity, most of the time. occasional will drop to 74f (so cold,... LOL)

I'm at a loss I've never came across this before. Any help is greatly appreciated..

Your separate thread was merged with your original thread. TacoCat already answered the question regarding the wiring for the water temperature sensor for the ECU (2 wires) and the coolant temp sending unit for the temperature gauge (1 wire).
