Default 2005 honda civic high beam stays on even when switch is off.

I have a 2005 honda civic and i’m having a problem with my high beam. The high beam light stays on when you turn the light switch of but its really dim. Goes of when i turn of the engine but when I start the engine again it doesnt come on until I put the hand break down then it comes on again. I just couldnt figure out what the problem is so i thought i’d try here before i take it to the shop.

How long did you have this car? Since you're in Canada, the Civic has Daytime Running Lights. What you describe is similar to the normal function of the Daytime Running Lights.

When you turn the ignition switch to ON (II) with
the parking brake released, the DRL control unit
supplies voltage and ground to the circuit.
The high beam headlights operate in series
and act as resistors to reduce the voltage to the
headlights

Ahhh i see, now i replaced the light bulbs with LEDs and the first LED i put on the left side is flickering so I replaced it with a different brand LED and the left side stays off. I checked the connection wiggled the connector to see if i had a bad connector but it wouldnt turn on.

Depending on the aftermarket LED bulb:
  • the bulbs may not be able to function as DRL with the reduced voltage; or
  • the polarity is wrong, some aftermarket LED bulbs allow for flipping the harness connector to be plugged into the bulb.

Don't put LED aftermarket bulbs in a halogen housing headlight. DRL won't work and you will glare oncoming traffic.
