Hello My daughter purchased a 05 CRV AWD few days ago. It has 180k. The car does look like it was well Maintained. However she came over last night. I noticed a whine coming from transmission side. Brief search on YT and Google indicates cover bearing. On LH side cover How can I confirm for sure this is the issue. ? I did drive it. Can't really hear it. Only at idle with hood open. i found few images of possible bearing . would it be any of these?
I have some experience with this having gone through this myself. I did order the side cover with the bearings included and Gasket. I didn't do the work myself because I didn't have the time so I took it to the Honda shop and they did it for me. It's a little involved to get the side cover off. You basically have to lower the transmission engine assembly down far enough so that you can easily pull the cover off. If you don't have the means to do this you'll have to take it to a shop. Be advised that this may not be a permanent repair. It can happen where the bearing on the side cover will wear and come loose unusually fast because of a bearing on the inside of the case. I've seen transmission shops send these cases out to have the bearing Mount holes bored out and then she shimed so that the bearings aren't able to move around and become loose in the case. This saves the case on a rebuild. However that being said my side cover repair has gone about 40,000 km so far. The only thing that I've noticed is that I do get a little bit of a wine from the third gear bearing.
Check out the parts diagram. It is listed as left side cover in the transmission section. It is sold as a complete cover with all bearings. Don't forget the gasket.
