Default D15y7 bolt ons

Hey boys, new here, Im looking to get some gains in hp out of my Ek 97s D15y7, what brand and parts do you guys recommend, I’m thinking finishing with a tune. Thought about a B20 swap but maybe not because my burger flipping money isn’t good haha thanks.

"BurgerFlipper87" lmao. Been there, can relate.

I don't mess around with NA D series, but with bolt ons and a tune you'd probably get at least a little more pep out of the engine. I'd advise you though to read through some build threads here on the website and see what numbers people are putting out on bolt-on D series, and compare that to a cheap LSVTEC or B20VTEC build. I'd make plans for each possible direction you could go, and add up the cost to each.

Something important to remember too is if you're after more speed/acceleration, it's critical to get a good gear ratio on your transmission as well especially as a NA car. I'd look into an aftermarket final drive gear from Mfactory or Gear-X as a tighter transmission ratio would likely have more of an immediate impact than full I/H/E bolt ons.

I appreciate your help, realistically how much hp or noticeable difference would I-H-E add to my d15? I’m not looking to race just looking to zip around town a little fast you know.

Someone with more experience on the NA SOHC may have a better idea than me, but with I/H/E and a tune I would expect you to gain 15 - 20WHP. That tighter final drive ratio would be a more noticeable change and a lot cheaper overall.

Bolt ons and tune aren't a bad idea, like I said just up to you how you want to go about this. I'd start a couple notepads and just compare costs and look at what results people have gotten.

Yea it seems most people don’t bother with the D platform, everyone’s swaping motors and so on. Probably best and cheaper to swap a B20 and get an LS trans and all that’s necessary for the swap to see dramatic improvements right?
then I/h/e and a tune… not sure that range of hp after all that…whats ur guess on hp on the b20 high comp and all the bolt ons and tune NA of course?

I agree with that idea, a stock B20 longblock (even without a VTEC head) paired with a close ratio transmission would still be very peppy around town and have a lot of low end pull. Unless you're really concerned about gas mileage, I'd highly suggest that you look for and try to get a B16 transmission rather than an LS. Bonus points if you can somehow score an ITR transmission which includes an LSD, and the 98-01 ITR transmissions also had an ever tighter 4.7 final drive.

Whatever your power output is will depend on how the dyno reads, but I'd expect you to land roughly somewhere between 135 -> 150WHP with a bolt on non-VTEC B20 engine.

tl;dr - I think the best bang for buck is a stock B20 longblock and a B16 trans. I think you'd be happy with that. Make sure you do some research on everything that will need to go into the swap though, just to know it's something you can handle. And if you rely on this car for work/commuting, I'd highly advise that you have a "Plan B" car for at least a couple weeks in case you run into any problems or issues during the swap.
