3 years and 35k miles ago I replaced the timing belt with a "Honda" kit on my wifes Odyssey, that I bought off eBay (more detail below). Last weekend the timing belt broke and left us stranded about a mile from the house. After getting it towed back to the house i took compression and got (0, 75, 0, 150, 0, 60)...... I then proceeded to pull both heads and found the following
1. Multiple valves on both heads obviously bent and unable to close
2. 1 rocker arm bearing blew apart and was sitting in pieces at the bottom of the cylinder head
3. 3 rocker arm bearings were rough when spun by hand
4. Damage to lobes on both camshafts
5. 3 of the pistons had noticeable "nicks" near the valve cutout that can be felt with a finger nail, no other damage noted in the piston or cylinder walls
6. Cams and crankshafts rotate "smoothly" by feel.
Given the extent of damage in the head im worried about additional damage in the pistons that i cannot see and possible damage to the crank journal bearings. I've never had to deal with a vehicle like this and dont have any perspective on how likely it is that there's additional damage in the crank case, and now im debating if i should buy a set of heads (reman or used) or if i should replace the entire motor (used). Can anyone provide any perspective on how concerned i should be with the piston/crankcase items, or any other opinions/advice on how i should proceed.
Timing Belt: After pulling the broken belt off, I noticed that there were no markings on the belt. Every Honda kit i found online showed belts with pretty clear markings (Mitsubishi I think). I then noticed the idler pulley bearing had a decent amount of lateral play; both tensioner and idler bearings were "DNJ" branded, I believe both of these bearing should have been "Koyo" from honda. I attempted to contact the seller True Blue Auto Parts at their website "trueblueautoparts.com" and their email "suport@trueblueparts.com". The website is down and the email address is invalid, I know support is misspelled in the email but thats what they gave in the "order shipped" email, i tried "support@trueblueparts.com" as well but nothing.
Re: J35A7, Broke timing belt, New heads or engine?
That engine is more than likely toast. changing the heads still won't address the issues in the block. You're better off with another engine and learned a lesson as to why not to get Honda parts from Ebay, unless they are from a verified source in the peach bags.
