Journal bearing damage, fixable/runnable or lost cause?
Hi all,
I bought a b16 cylinder head online and when it came in I inspected it and found a few scores on the cam journal bearings on two surfaces: one on an intake and one on the furthest exhaust. They appear on both the cam caps and the cylinder head. Should I worry? Are they repairable, like if I knocked down the high spots can I run it and be okay? Or is it too far gone at this point? I’d really like to make it work and work reliably but I just need some more opinions before I do anything rash.
On another issue, the furthest passenger exhaust side cam cap has a crack, strangely past where the camshaft ends.. I want to say it’s toast, but I’m not sure if it’s in a critical location on the cam cap or not.
Re: Journal bearing damage, fixable/runnable or lost cause?
That Crack you have is clearly caused by from whomever put a aftermarket triple oring cam seal in with a tonne of sealant and over torqueing. The crack has appeared to have travelled into the journal and I would be a bit worried. Best thing to do would replace it and have it line honed if possible... Or take a gamble and very carefully and gently wet sand it in the same direction as rotation with 2000 grit sandpaper that is wrapped around a socket that is nearly the same diameter as the journal. Only polish it a tad and run it. Probably will be fine with just doing that since the bolts will hold it together.
