So I bought a 97 crv yesterday with 180k on it.

when I looked at it first it would start from cold, run for 5-10 seconds then shut off.

then trying to start after that was rather difficult. You would have to hold down the gas to keep it from stalling.

once the engine was fully warmed up it would run and idle and you could turn it off and start up again.

so today I took apart the throttle body apart cleaned it all up, cleaned the iacv, topped off the coolant, replaced the spark plugs with oem Honda.

Go to start it up from cold and she’s struggling to idle.

Any ideas?

 

Have you checked for any codes? Could be an engine temp sensor not enriching enough for cold condition.

 

mm I haven’t had any, but I can give it a scan quick.


edit, just checked. No codes

it does not over heat, and the fans come on and off properly. I’ve watched the engine temp live on my scanner and it stays within proper operating temp.

 

Problem fixed. Checked valves and they were far out of spec. Atleast the exhaust was very far out. But yeah started right up no problems.
