93 Accord, hard start, odd experience with fix.
I picked up this 93 Accord 5+ years ago for $200 as it ran well, had a bad clutch and they figured it was not worth the $ to fix.
As i live in a cold windy climate up here in Montana, i always install a full sized truck 900 CCA battery as i don't plug my car in (block heater) and i want to make sure that it starts in the winter.
For the past few months my car has been hard to start. At first it would take 2-3 tries, but would fire right up and for the rest of the day and had zero issues starting.
For the last week my car got to the point where it would take 12 tries to get the car to start. We have not had any really cold nights, perhaps down to the high 20F's or low 30F's. This was worrisome with winter coming on.
This summer i used some Sea Foam to try to fix the issue in case it was a dirty sensor issue. This seemed to help, but just for the one tank of gas. I only drive about 125 miles per week, but i average 58-75mph as most of it is highway (15 min to town + in town driving). I have never had an injector issue in the past with any vehicle as i keep up on the maintenance.I had also pulled the starting relay switch out of a 91-92 accord thinking this may be the issue, then finding out that my car does not have that under the dash box.I figured that i could not find the issue until the car would not start period, then i could diagnose it better.
I was helping my friend do some odds and ends on his early 90's Accord a few days ago and we could hear it crank over so much faster than my car. This finally got the gears going in my head and i put my battery load tester on my car and it immediately dropped to 8 volts.
**The fix is that while my super sized battery could still crank over the car well enough, the voltage was not high enough to kick on the ignition. I hope this can help someone in the future who might have a similar issue.
