Default Rear struts something looks wrong

Hi, my first post, could not find this on search. My daughter's 1990 GS hatchback was lowered by prior owners, the car squeaks a lot, when I tried to track it down found the pix attached. The rod on the strut is rubbing against the cup, there are even metal shavings. This is on both sides. I'm a neophyte but it looks like a bushing is missing or the struts are just installed incorrectly. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Wow. Some people....

You are missing the rubber bushings for the top hats. With the amount of material worn away you might want to find complete tophat replacements.

Wow, thanks! Yeah, that is what I thought, but wasn't sure if this was some sort of modification, or just a big miss by the prior owners. The cover boots were loose in the wheel well.... I saw the schematics on line and it shows what you're saying. Really appreciate the answer, RYANTHEGREAT1! I will take your advice, the metal is pretty ground down in a couple of spots. Stay tuned, my guess is there will be more of this to come, holy cow!
