1997 civic hatchback clutch safety switch rubber bumper replacement - HOW?!?!?!?
I recently removed the clutch safety switch and tested it manually and it's fine, so I think the rubber bumper must have fallen out. I did find little pieces on the floor, so I'm pretty certain that's the problem. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to replace it, though. There does not seem to be any way to even reach where it's located. Does anyone have any ideas?
Also, why do they even have the rubber bumper? It seems completely useless except to make life miserable 20 years down the road.

Ok, thanks. I guess what I am really asking, is after I have purchased the rubber stopper, how do I even reach the hole? I can barely fit my hand in the space to remove the safety switch, and I can't see any way to get to the part of the clutch pedal where the rubber stopper goes. There's a metal shroud that covers the whole assembly in that area. Do I have to remove the whole clutch pedal assembly to get to it, or is there something easier that I'm missing?
Take your longest, skinniest flathead, wrap some duct tape (sticky side out) around the tip, and stick the rubber pad to it. Climb up under the dash facing up, then awkwardly push in the pedal about halfway with one hand, and with your other hand use the screwdriver to fish the pad in place. It's a pain, but it's the only way I've found to get it done with the pedal cluster installed in the car.
Thanks! The whole clutch safety switch area is a nightmare. My whole hand is torn up from removing the old one.
