Default Coolant Reservoir Question

Hi Everyone,
I'm a first time Honda owner (bought my 1995 Del Sol Si last month) and a new Honda-Tech forum member. I'm very interested in learning more about my Del Sol. This will probably be an easy question to answer, but I just wanted to make sure my coolant reservoir isn't damaged. The top piece that the hose connects to -- is this supposed to go up and down when you lift up on it? Or should it be stationary? Maybe by going up and down it allows the reservoir to release excess coolant if it has to? But just wanted to make sure. If it pops up under normal conditions, won't that let air in and allow the coolant to evaporate? Thanks very much.

Default Re: Coolant Reservoir Question

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. There is 2 hoses regarding the reservoir both of which are smaller diameter hoses.

One goes from the radiator neck to the reservoir. Then the other is connected to the underside of the reservoir cap and goes down into the reservoir. The inside tube will come up when you unscrew the reservoir cap and pull up. It will come out of the fluid and dribble some fluid back into the reservoir. This is not a biggy and will not affect operation. The reservoir will actually purge tiny amounts of air that it may acquire from you pulling the cap up to check reservoir level.

When the car is hot (driven until full operating temperature {fans kick on twice}) you check the reservoir and top it to the top line if it is not already. Then let it cool and it should not fall below the bottom line once fully cold (sits overnight).

If you don't have any coolant leaks or consumption problems, the level in the reservoir should now stay between the two lines for the rest of days.
